To Teach or Not to Teach…?
November 6, 2007 by sillybachi
So as I remember 15 years ago, I had the opportunity to pretend like I’m a teacher. There was an opening at a public school (Islamic) in Pahang, it was here that two of my friends have worked at, and I was asked to substitute for one of my friends who teaches form 4 and form 5 English. She went on vacation for a week so I was able to try my hand at teaching and see how I like being a teacher. During Ramadan, I was offered a long-term subbing position to fill in for the form 4&5 so this was like a trial period for me.
During the week that I subbed, I can honestly say I learned a few things:
1.) Yes. Kids still take advantage of substitutes by trying to trick them and making up “rules”. But (ha ha! I was too smart for them…it hasn’t been THAT long since I was harassing my sub…I know their little tricks.)
2.) Teaching really gives you a sense of power to change things. I found it both exhilarating and scary that the kids looked up to me as a teacher. Exhilarating because they looked to me for answers and scary for the same reason. What if I’m doing something wrong? What if I’m saying something wrong? I’m only human, I know, but I don’t want to shoulder the responsibility for misinforming them. Which leads to my next point…
3.) Teaching is a HUGE responsibility. Kids naturally look up to the teacher, whether they like it or not. It’s the teacher’s responsibility to behave as a role model. Which means don’t be shy in teaching them a thing or two about life in general.
4.) Teachers need to be kind. There’s no point in berating or talking in a condescending way to any student. It’s such a shame and I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes at this school I was subbing at. It makes the students shut off and loathe you, but also robs you of the opportunity to actually affect them in any way. Nobody wants to listen to a meanie.
Although I really enjoyed teaching, I have to say the only thing I would go there for is the kids. They’re truly amazing. Other than that…I don’t know. The school barely pays anything. The environment is extremely gloomy and depressing (I guess it’s that particular group of Muslims that…uh…don’t believe in smiling….or maybe everyone is just having a bad day…I don’t know.). There is a sense of disorganization everywhere, from the administration to the classroom.
But on the plus side, it’s an Islamic environment…you won’t find any sleazy co-workers trying to slither their arms around your waist over here! But the main reason I even considered the opportunity was because this long-term subbing position (approx. 3 months) would give me the chance to connect with the age group I want to write for. This is probably the only thing that’s held me back from totally rejecting this offer…but I think I would still be able to manage even if I didn’t work there.
I don’t know…should I or shouldn’t I…? I can’t decide.

Mobile Phones (Nokia Vs Other Brands)
When mention the word Nokia, I presume that 9 out 10 people know what I am talking about while their mind starts to differentiate the significant parts of the device with the other.
It may be the most preferred kind/type of mobile phone as far as I concern. There are many facts that this statement was made in the first place. But perhaps what matters the most is my point of view!
I love the Nokia mainly because of its functions and do not care much about the sleek design etc. Function of Nokia is very user friendly compared with other. This is because it gave the freedom to software and application developers to came up with their idea in upgrading, styling and personalizing the Nokia when others mostly restricted their software application being excess by developers which I guess for security reasons.
However lately the mobile manufacturer came up with a common basic software called Java and Symbian which is very smart in adapting theirselves in the specific phones. With it, almost all the associated phone is like Nokia now.
But still the mechanical specification of Nokia is also the main reason for my choice, the slightest thing that differs from the other sometimes determine why we chose it due to familiarity and convenience - such as the position of ‘space bar button’ when using the SMS, Nokia uses the button ‘zero (0)’ where Sony Ericsson uses ‘button 1’ and Vodafone uses “# button’, these are the few examples which differs the Nokia from the other. The Nokia also comes in variety of replaceable casing for its outer looks which other do have but not as much.
For me I prefer the Nokia because it allows me to express my feelings, interest and satisfactory by giving me the opportunity to change and manipulate its functions just the way I want where I find it very difficult with other phone.

Mohd.Akhyar.G2.Footbal Vs Futsal(indoor football)
There is much kind of sports around this world, such as football, badminton, rugby and so on. What I’m going to describe is about two different sports which are popular among the Bruneians and all over the world. I’m going to describe about the similarities and the differences between football and futsal. Football has been played for hundred years or thousands. But futsal is a new sport which was introduced few years ago. Both sports are similar but there are some differences in regulation and where it is played.
Firstly, I’m going to state the similarities between football and futsal. Both of them are team sports. They are played in teams against other teams. Football is an outdoor game, while futsal is an indoor game. Both games use a ball, although the size is different. In contrast, a soccer ball is more bouncy and big. While a futsal ball is smaller than soccer ball and less bounce. The other similarity is players can be replaced by substitutes. In football they only allowed 3 substitutions. In futsal, there are no limitations of subs. The regulation between the two sports is exactly similar.
Although they are almost similar, but there are also differences. In contrast, football is played on grass pitches and only 11 players are allowed to play in one team. While in futsal, it is played in a hall and only 5 players are allowed to play. Another difference is there is only one referee in football while in futsal they are two referees beside the line. The size of the pitches are also different, futsal is smaller than football pitches. Football plays for 90 minutes and there is half time after 45minutes whereas futsal plays for 40 minutes and there is a half time after 20 minutes.
In brief we can see that both sports give a player chance to develop their own skills and physics. It’s important for a player to have a self discipline and teamwork in both sports. Now football and futsal became more popular in this region.

Rosimah.G2.Football and Netball
I am going to write about the similarities and differences between two sports; netball and football. Sports have been played all over the world for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. Some of who them are very popular and most sports provide many benefits to anyone who plays them. There are many different kinds. Some of them are played individually, whereas others are played in teams against another team.
There are some important similarities between netball and football. Firstly, they are both team sports. In both of these sports, players can be replaced by substitutes when they are injured or tired. A netball team consists of seven players, while a football team is made up of eleven players. Another similarity between them is that they both use a ball, although these are not exactly the same. A football is round, light, quite hard, and made of either leather of synthetic material. It is usually black and white. In contrast, a basketball is generally not as light and it is made of hard rubber. It is usually a reddish-brown colour.
Although there are some similarities, there are also some important differences. One difference is the part of the body used to control the ball. Another obvious difference is the places that these sports are played. Football is generally played outdoors on grass pitches, whereas basketball is usually played indoors on a wooden surface, although quite a lot of people also play outdoors on concrete netball courts. In football, the feet are used to dribble, kick and trap the ball. Also, people sometimes use their heads to head the ball. In contrast, netball players can only use their hands to control the ball, which they dribble, pass and shoot.
All in all, most sports, especially team sports like netball and football, give players a chance to develop themselves physically. They can also learn self-discipline and teamwork at the same time. That is probably the reason basketball and football are so popular all around the world.

Zainul.G2.Cars and Bikes.
Transportation is one of the most important necessities in our life. It is useful to us in terms of being on time at a certain place. There are two types of transportation commonly used by people. They are bikes and cars. I am going to write about the similarities and differences between two sports; cars and bikes.
The similarities of these two are that they both travel very fast. But each type travels at different speed. A car travel at 200km/h maximum and a bike can travel up to 300km/h. Although a car has larger cubic centimeter (CC) at their cylinder, but a bike is much faster. This is because a car carries larger net weigh than a bike.
The differences however, that a bike has doesn’t guarantee the driver in case of rain in the middle of the trip, where with a car, rain is no problem. Plus a bike has very limited seats, it can’t exceed more than two but a car can carry at least four passengers up to seven. On the other hand, a bike can park at any open space whereas a car has difficult time to park especially when there are only limited spaces available.
All in all, these 2 types of transportation can bring you to places you desire within reach. It can save your time and even take you on time especially at work or meetings.

Ak.Muhaimin.G2.Brazil Vs Brunei Football
Football is an international sport. It is the most famous sport in the world. It is a unisex sport. But most male only play football.
Brazil’s national team is more professional than Brunei’s national team. However both of the national team plays the same sport; that is football. Brazilian known playing football is much early discovery than Bruneian. This means that Brazilian got the advantage having more experience than Brunei’s national team. Although Brunei players have the least knowledge and experience in playing football, they are working hard as many strong teams out there.
However, Bruneian loves playing football as much as Brazilian does. This will improve their performance in the name of the game. Brazilian has professional trainers and training. They have the best coaches. Comparing with Brunei national’s team; they got semi-professional coaches and training. Bruneian national’s team player other got job as their main profession comparing with the Brazil’s national team, football is their main profession. Brazil’s player doesn’t have to worry on other things except football and family.
When I got the chance to watch, I will watch Brunei’s national team and Brazil’s national team. This is because I love football very much. I got to see real action watching Brazil’s national team playing comparing to Brunei’s national team honestly.

Ummu Hajidah.G2.Single gender classes vs mixed classes.
Single gender classes are the norm here in the Brunei.I am going to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between single gender classes ith mixed gender classes.
There are some distinct similarities between the two. The first similarity is that both the school provide the same education in learning. Secondly, any facilities required in learning are also provided by the government.
Although there are similarities, there are several differences between the environments of the single gender classes with the mixed classes. The first difference is that, in single gender classes, let’s say all girls, the environment of study is more comfortable and can concentrate more on the study. While in the mixed classes, some students cannot concentrate on their studies due to several matters especially love matters. This may affect the concentration of their studies. But there is an advantage on mixed school too. In mixed class we can help each other especially when dealing with physical need, men are needed. The disadvantage of single classes are, from what we always heard is the some students get involve in same gender couple or in other words ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’. This is a bad social problem in Brunei.
We can see that there are advantages and disadvantages for both classes. For me, I will choose mixed classes. If we want to study, gender is not considered. It is depending on each individual.

Rabiatuladawiyah.G2. arranged versus love marriages. Say which one you would prefer if given the choice and why.
Today, arranged marriage is not as popular as love marriage. Long ago, arranged marriage is considered as a blessing and an honor for the family, nowadays, arranged marriage is considered as old-fashioned and hellish but the said event is still going on in certain part of the world. Here, I’m going to compare and contrast the similarities and the differences of arranged marriage and love marriage.
There are some clear similarities between arranged marriage and love marriage. The distinct similarity is both of them unite a man and a woman on a sacred vow. Two families are united and a new family will be created. Another similarity is that, there will be a new addition into the new family in the future: babies.
However, despite the similarities there will also be the differences. An arrange marriage is always set between two families without the man and woman’s consent. In this case, the man and woman are complete strangers to each other and are sometimes forced to marry. Whereas, love marriage is an agreed marriage, having the man and woman knowing and caring for each other, importantly love.
In brief, there will be points to consider whether arranged marriage is better than love marriage. For me, I would prefer love marriage where I would know and understand the person I’m being married to.

In this world there are various kinds of sports. Football is one of the most famous and popular sports and in contrast to hockey where there is a lots of people playing it.
Football where people playing it in the field and whereas hockey playing in a field where it is covered with green carpet. In football and hockey, the same kinds of shoe are used where the difference of it is hockey is used stick and football shin guard.
Lots of the famous player in football makes it billionaire rather than in hockey. But in hockey there’s not much dangerous games. Football is dangerous when its start with a fight between two player from both team. Where referees in football controlling the games where three referees inside the field and one in charge of the substitution where as in hockey there’s only two referees controlling the games.
In this compare contrast of the title that I mention above, as a statistic in brunei there’s a lots people playing football rather than in hockey. Any kind of age playing football.

Azim.G2- comparison between laptop and desktop
Compare & Contrast of a laptops and a PC desktops.
Nowadays laptops and a desktop are very famous especially a laptops. It is commonly used for writing a document, notepad, publishing advertisement, making graph, etc.
Desktops and laptops have similarities. Both can do writing a document, doing a calculation, do programming and publishing advertisement. Most laptops and desktops are used in office and in schools. Both using a process which is to operate or manage the hardware and the system.
Despite the similarities, there are differences between laptop and desktop such as laptops are smaller than a desktop, so we can bring laptops anywhere, but desktop cannot. Desktop hardware are scattered with using a lots of wire or cable, whereas laptops hardware are compact and form a ‘notebook’. This is why sometimes laptops are called ‘notebook’. Usually laptops costs more than desktops and laptops can operate using a battery charger itself, desktops can only operate by supplying socket.
I prefer to use laptops than desktops. Laptops are easier to use and we can bring it anywhere, but not for a desktop. Desktops can be only use in one place. This is the important thing why the laptops are frequently used.
